How to Care for Wool Slippers – Cleaning, Drying & Reshaping Guide
Why Wool Slippers Need Different Care
Wool slippers get more wear than almost anything else in your home. They are worn on bare feet, walked on daily, and rarely washed. The good news is that organic sheep wool is naturally odour-resistant and self-cleaning to a degree, so slippers need washing far less often than you might expect. The bad news is that slippers are shaped, and shaped wool is the easiest thing to ruin in a washing machine.
The rule of thumb: clean gently, dry slowly, and hold the shape while it dries.
Everyday Care
- Air them out overnight rather than tucking them straight into a cupboard. A few hours in open air handles most freshness issues.
- Rotate between two pairs if you wear slippers all day, so each pair gets time to dry out fully between wears.
- Brush the outside occasionally with a soft clothes brush to lift dust and keep the fibres from matting.
- Wear them indoors only. Outdoor grit wears down the sole and grinds into the wool.
Spot Cleaning (Try This First)
Most marks on wool slippers do not need a full wash:
- Let mud or spills dry completely, then brush off the loose material.
- Mix a few drops of wool detergent into cool water.
- Dab the mark with a cloth dipped in the solution. Work from the outside of the stain inwards so you do not spread it.
- Wipe with a cloth dampened in clean water to lift the soap, then let it air dry.
Avoid soaking the whole slipper when only one spot needs attention. Less water means less risk of felting and misshaping.
How to Wash Wool Slippers
When a full clean is needed, hand washing is the only method we recommend for shaped wool footwear.
- Fill a basin with cool water, no warmer than 30°C. Heat plus movement is what causes wool to felt and shrink.
- Add a small amount of wool detergent or a mild baby shampoo. Skip biological and enzyme detergents, which break down natural protein fibres.
- Submerge the slippers and press gently. Never scrub, twist or wring.
- Soak for around 10 minutes, then rinse in cool clean water until the water runs clear.
- Press out excess water between your palms, supporting the whole slipper.
If the slippers have a leather or suede sole, keep the sole out of the water as much as you can and wipe it clean separately.
Drying Without Losing the Shape
This is the step that matters most. Wool slippers dry into whatever shape you leave them in.
- Roll each slipper in a dry towel and press to absorb water. Do not wring.
- Stuff the inside with rolled-up towel, tissue paper or a clean cloth until the slipper holds its original shape.
- Leave to air dry at room temperature, away from radiators, direct sun and any other heat source.
- Swap the stuffing once it feels damp, usually after a few hours.
- Allow 24 to 48 hours to dry fully. Wool holds moisture deep in the fibre even when the surface feels dry.
Never tumble dry wool slippers. The combination of heat and tumbling will shrink them a full size or more, permanently.
Keeping Them Fresh Between Washes
- Sprinkle a little bicarbonate of soda inside, leave overnight, then shake and brush it out.
- Cedar shoe inserts absorb moisture and deter moths at the same time.
- Never store slippers damp. Damp wool is what causes both musty smells and moth damage.
Dealing With Pilling and Matting
Small pills on the surface are normal on new wool and are not a defect. Lift them off with a fabric comb or a wool pilling remover while the slipper is dry. For flattened, matted wool inside the slipper, brush gently with a soft brush once dry to lift the fibres back up.
Storing Wool Slippers Off-Season
- Clean and fully dry them before storing. This is non-negotiable with wool.
- Stuff lightly to hold the shape.
- Store in a breathable cotton bag or a cardboard box, never a sealed plastic bag.
- Add cedar blocks or lavender sachets and refresh them each season.

Why Organic Wool Slippers Last Longer
Organic sheep wool keeps its natural lanolin, which repels dirt and moisture and gives the fibre its resilience. That is why a well-made wool slipper stays warm without overheating, resists odour without any chemical treatment, and springs back into shape season after season. Treated gently, a single pair can easily outlast several pairs of synthetic ones.

Bought a pair for my Mother as a gift and she loves them.
Warm, comfortable and great looking.
Fabulous slippers. So comfy. ☺️
I have had a pair of woollen socks knitted by a friend and darned them so much there is no original sock left on the bottoms! Finally I have found an authentic replacement. I wear them as slippers but you could wrar them in wellies.
I ordered the boot slippers and I love them. They are warm and comfortable, as well as durable and sturdy. My 18-year old son wanted them too, and I ordered another pair for him and he loves them too.
